Repro-Scan for Feedlots

Managing pregnant heifers on a feedlot can be a real problem. The costs associated with pregnant heifers average between $44 to $150 per pregnant animal (see Article in Drovers "Managing pregnant feedlot heifers")

REPRO-SCAN allows for the rapid and portable detection of pregnancy in beef heifers so that pregnant heifers in a feedlot can be identifies and managed appropriately (watch video on preg checking heifers in a feedlot)  This technology allows for pregnancy detection without inserting one’s arm into the rectum. This is accomplished by a customized ultrasound probe extension. This can be done through the side of the chute which is easier, safer and faster than palpation from behind the heifer.

Yearling feeder heifers can be ultrasounded on or near time of arrival.  Heifers calves can be ultrasound at a later processing date. There are significant economic benefits and animal welfare concerns that can be addressed by adapting the REPRO-SCAN technology.  For more information on this technology and the economics of identifying pregnant heifers contact us.
